We never think about our windows, often until it’s too late. They offer us sunlight and amazing views. The neglect of your windows can cost you hundreds, sometimes thousands. Let’s make sure that doesn’t happen to you. Here is a Do’s and Dont’s list to follow so you can keep your windows in tip top shape.
Tools of the trade:
• Squeegee
• Monsoon
• Towels
• Ladder/Step Ladder
• Window Scraper
• Steel Wool Fine
Do:
Keep Windows Dry when able by squeegeeing off water. Excess water can leave stains on glass called hard water stains caused by minerals and contaminants in most water.
Squeegeeing when cleaning and drying off window sills with a towel will prevent excess wear and tear including rot. Never use abrasives or chemicals to clean windows. A mild ph balanced soapy detergent is best.
pro-tip:
Window Scrapers and Fine Wool Steel are abrasives; however used correctly can remove tough gummed on dirt or other residue. On certain types of windows including soft glass (poor quality glass) these abrasives will end up scratching and marking your windows. Abrasives should never be used on tinted windows. If unsure about window/glass type test a small non-conspicuous area. Make sure to look at different angles and check when the sun isn’t directly pointing at the window.
Side-Note:
If you see a lot of water pooling on your window sill outside and not running down; contact a professional contractor immediately especially if you see hole or cracks near the window where water can travel besides away. This can lead to future rot, mildew in the encasement and jams of the window. Proper irrigation of sills and window encasements is crucial and a common weak point in homes.
Don’t:
Clean your windows with a garden hose
Leave your windows wet
Attempt to polish your windows
Treat your windows with compounds or agents
Clean your windows with brushes or abrasives
The most important thing for proper window cleaning is maintenance. The more you neglect your windows, the more work you will have to do to get them looking new. Sometimes neglect will be irreparable due to the minerals in water and corrosives or compounds from walls on your house. Keeping the exterior of your house clean also extends the life of the exterior of your house. Too many forget or neglect the cleaning of the exterior of their homes.
in summary:
Techniques and tools are important but the most important thing when cleaning windows is to do it routinely and correctly.
